From a resident on West 55th between Ninth and Tenth:
On Saturday I noticed two overflowing large garbage cans on the north west side of the street close to 10th ave. With disgusting refuse spilled all around them. They have been there since then. There are no residential buildings there, it is the back of the school's entrance on W.56th. It is supremely disgusting, pigeons are always there, the garbage gets dumped and left. A complete health hazard and eye sore. Baby's with strollers and people with dogs constantly go past. I took pictures and called 311.
West 55BA response:
Keep calling 311 and Sanitation. We will ask the NYPD to ticket whoever is dumping garbage there if you get a vehicle plate number or other ID.
Update (May 26, 2011): We just heard from the Sanitation Community Affairs Officer -- they are sending a sanitation enforcement officer to 55 St/10 Ave to investigate. Will keep you posted.
Update (June 1, 2011):
From CS: "Hey Guys....They cleaned up the block! I got a call from Sanitation department on Saturday when I was out of town saying that they picked up the abandoned barrels. I assume it was because of my calls to 311 since they had my phone number. Anyway, just wanted to let you know and thanks very much for your assistance and concern. . . . Thanks again!"From Christine: Congratulations! Often times we find if we can get several people to call, email (and/or blog) about the same issue, we get a better result. Anyway, the point is, it worked.
